GUWAHATI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is examining a proposal to permit the use of basic, non-programmable calculators in exams for Class 12 accountancy students from the 2025-26 academic session. This decision was ratified at the board’s 140th governing body meeting as part of broader reforms in assessment, syllabus structure, and evaluation.

According to reports, only basic calculators with functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentage calculations will be allowed. CBSE will further issue guidelines on permissible models in this regard to ensure uniformity and prevent misuse of advanced devices.

Additionally, CBSE will also introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for digital evaluation of answer sheets. This system, initially tested in select subjects, will scan and upload answer sheets for digital marking, aiming to make evaluations faster and more efficient. From the 2024-25 session, OSM will apply to science and mathematics supplementary exams and revaluation cases for Classes 10 and 12.

Additionally, a new re-evaluation process has also been introduced for students dissatisfied with their marks. The curriculum and assessment structure for vocational subjects has also been revised, as the board will collaborate with an independent agency to align assessments with industry standards.
