GUWAHATI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it mandatory for schools to report all cases of low attendance.

Schools will now have to submit supporting documents and a final call will be taken by the board in accordance with its by-laws.

This is being mandated as board officials after an analysis of the 2019 results found that students whose attendance had been condoned, performed poorly in the examinations. Thus, CBSE officials have prepared the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to deal with this problem.

It should be noted that students are allowed to take leaves when suffering from a prolonged illness, loss of mother or father or reasons of similar nature, authorised participation in sports in national and international level.

In all these cases, the schools will have to submit a request letter from the parent, certificate issued by authority concerned and recommendation of school concerned.

In addition to that, schools will now have to compile attendance date up to January 1 and check for cases of short attendance every academic session. These cases, with supporting documents will have to be sent to CBSE regional office by January 7, and following this, the regional office will revert back with any deficiency in documents.

According to CBSE officials, the last date for according approvals by CBSE will be February 7 before examinations.
