Dr. Hitesh Baruah, Managing Director of Nemcare and Dr NJ Sharma, former NEC Advisor (Health), have been charged in a case by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with misuse of North Eastern Council (NEC) funds.

The CBI FIR accuses them of fraudulently purchasing costly equipment using NEC funds, at very high rates, in the name of burn care unit. The duo provided no justification why such exorbitant prices were paid for the equipment.
Moreover, they are also accused of forming an unauthorised technical and purchase committee where they themselves were members.

As per the FIR, there was a proposed Rs. 10 crore, fully-equipped 12-bed burn care unit which was to be set up in Nemcare Hospital. Sharma, the then NEC health advisor, helped get a support of Rs. 2.70 crore, as well. Interestingly, the NEC funded equipment was found to be used in various departments of Nemcare Hospital for the general patients.
