Call for harnessing potential of river Brahmaputra

The College of Defence Management (CDM), Secunderabad organised its first off-campus seminar in Guwahati yesterday on the theme “Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Development of Brahmaputra basin and its implications on National Security” with special emphasis on development of inland waterways. State Minister of Science, Technology and Water Resources Keshab Mahanta delivered the keynote address where he reiterated the need for harnessing the tremendous potential of the Brahmaputra for ensuring inclusive growth in the region. Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia apprised the participants of the State government’s vision on development of the Brahmaputra basin. The seminar was conducted with all-round participation from all stakeholders including Central and State government representatives, academicians, including those from IIT-G, CDPS, industry representatives from NEDFi, FINER, NGOs and civil society members, and the armed forces. An exclusive session was conducted on inland waterways development where deliberations ranged from history of riverine transport, the BBIN project and also plans for development of National Waterway 2 on the Brahmaputra. The delegates also discussed implications of development of the Brahmaputra from a national security perspective. A book reading session was also organised during the event.
