Cab Drivers Demand Reduction In MV Act Penalties

GUWAHATI: Cab drivers of the state are set to submit a memorandum to the transport commissioner as well as the deputy commissioner demanding reduction in fines of the new Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) 2019.

President of All Assam Cab Owners’ Association, Ismail Ali, told G Plus, “With the introduction of the amended motor vehicle act, fines have been hiked for riding an uninsured vehicle. The drivers might have outdated vehicle documents due to some genuine reasons too and we do not support this.”

He further added that penalties have been increased for other offences too which is too steep.

“Since states have the power to reduce the penalties for different offences, we would like to request the authorities to slash the fines like in Gujarat,” said Ali.

The new Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019 was implemented in Guwahati from September 24, Tuesday. Under the Act, the penalty for traffic violations was increased by 5 to 10 times in different cases.
