Bridge Over Teesta Reconnects Flood-Hit Areas In Sikkim

GUWAHATI: The troops of Trishakti Corps, Indian Army, in collaboration with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), completed the construction of a Bailey bridge over the Teesta River at Chungthang on November 15.

This achievement marks the reconnection of flood-affected areas in North Sikkim with the mainland, reestablishing crucial communication links that were severed on the night of October 3.

The newly constructed 200-foot Bailey bridge holds the distinction of being the longest and heaviest single-span Bailey bridge that can be launched. The Border Roads Organization initiated the project by constructing concrete abutments. The subsequent bridge construction by the Trishakti Sappers took approximately five days to complete.

The inauguration of the bridge was led by Samdup Lepcha, Minister of Roads and Bridges, Government of Sikkim. The event was attended by officials from the Indian Army, BRO, and Civil Administration.

Engineer troops from the Trishakti Corps, along with the BRO and heavy Earth Moving plants, played a crucial role in the bridging operation. The completion of the Bailey Bridge underscores the commitment of the Indian Army to nation-building, exemplifying its unwavering support for the people of the country during times of crisis.

With the newly constructed bridge in place, a seamless movement of vehicles and the efficient provision of relief material to the flood-affected areas are now possible.
