GUWAHATI: Approval to the Assam Tourism (Development and Registration) Bill, 2024 was granted by the Assam Government in its State Cabinet Meeting held on January 31 which showcased key features geared towards regulating and fostering various aspects of the tourism sector within the state.

The proposed bill will encompass revitalising and promoting the tourism industry in Assam.

Among the prominent features of the bill is the mandatory registration of all businesses and permitted activities associated with tourism. This includes hotels, heritage properties, homestay operators, service apartments, travel agents, and other entities involved in the tourism ecosystem. The comprehensive registration process is anticipated to streamline the functioning of these establishments and enhance transparency.

Another notable provision within the bill is the establishment of an Adventure Safety Audit Committee. This committee will be tasked with conducting a thorough risk assessment of adventure sites and activities across the state. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of tourists engaging in adventurous pursuits and instill confidence in Assam's tourism offerings.

To enforce compliance and maintain the integrity of the tourism sector, the bill introduces penalties for contraventions. This measure is expected to deter any potential malpractices and ensure adherence to the regulatory framework set forth by the legislation.

Moreover, the bill grants the State the authority to issue directions and regulations concerning activities within tourist areas. This provision empowers the government to actively manage and guide tourism-related endeavours, contributing to the overall development of the sector.
