Bihar Elections: BJP-RJD Go Neck and Neck

The vote counting trends in the Bihar elections show a slight edge for the NDA while the Mahagathbandhan led by the RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav, younger son of Laloo Prasad Yadav, is giving a tough fight to wrest power from three-time chief minister Nitish Kumar.

The story of the counting so far is that Nitish Kumar, three-time chief minister, is facing anti-incumbency. However, his partner in the alliance, the BJP, performed much better than expected.

As per estimates, the NDA is leading in 126 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan is on 107 seats.

As per the Election Commission, the BJP has won five seats, JD (U) two, RJD two, and the Congress' one.

However, the early leads are not indicative of the Bihar Assembly election as only 10% of the votes have been counted. Due to the COVID-19, there are many more voting booths and as such more EVMS. “Earlier, there used to be 25-26 rounds of counting, but this time it went up to around 35 rounds. So the counting will continue till late evening,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar, HR Srinivas said.

Meanwhile, the JD(U) workers are already celebrating in Patna as the BJP leads. On the other hand, the RJD has stated that a new government is likely to be formed. "Bihar is going to get its own government and nobody can stop it. I request Chief Minister whose exit is confirmed, to stop calling returning officers to slow down the counting of votes. He can only delay his defeat," said Manoj Jha, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP.
