Bhutan Releases Kurishu Dam Water, Assam on Red-Alert

GUWAHATI: The flood situation has worsened in Lower Assam following the release of excess waters from the Kuricchu Hydropower Plant reservoirs in Kuricchu river in Bhutan.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA)’s daily flood bulletin, floodwaters have inundated 20 of 33 districts in the state and a red alert has been sounded in districts of Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa and Bongaigaon.

Reportedly, with the release of the dam water, Assam's Barpeta district was worst hit because of incessant rains and release of excess waters from the hydropower dam.

Meanwhile, the Pathsala sub-divisional civil hospital has been submerged by floodwaters and patients have been shifted to the Dharamshala.

During the high-level meeting held in the deputy commissioner’s conference hall, the district administration decided to shift people from the riverside of Pahumara and other rivers of the district to safer places.
