BBCI Successfully Conducts 1st Stereotactic Radio Surgery

GUWAHATI: In a significant development in cancer care during COVID-19 pandemic, Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati has started Stereotactic Radio Surgery for the first time in the northeast India.

On 17th July, the high dose of radiotherapy in a single fraction called stereotactic radio surgery was first conducted on a 56 year old female patient of primary lung cancer. It was carried out by using VMAT and 6XFFF Beams.  

According to Dr AK Kalita, Professor & Head, Dept. of 
Radiation Oncology, the advantages of this highly sophisticated treatment is its non-invasive procedure, which reduces hazards of open surgery and requires shorter treatment time.

Dr M Bhattacharyya, Professor, Dept. of Radiation Oncology and Deputy Director (Research) stated that this Linear Accelerator based frameless radiosurgery treatment is more convenient for the patient. It is also associated with high rate of tumour control.  

Director of BBCI, Dr AC Kataki congratulated all the faculty members, medical physicists, and technologists of the Department for achieving this important milestone.  Dr Debabrata Barmon, Deputy Director (Academics) stated such advanced treatment facility will be very beneficial for the students of Radiation Oncology .

This high end Linear Accelerator was inaugurated by Mr. K. N. Vyas, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. of India on 8th February, 2019 in presence of Dr. C. S. Pramesh, Director, TMH, Mumbai .
