GUWAHATI: Basanta Kumar Goswami, a prominent writer and scholar, was elected as the new president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha on Sunday, December 29. Goswami secured over 400 votes in the election, winning over Upen Rabha Hakacham, an academician and writer, who garnered more than 320 votes. The vote counting for the prestigious literary body's election took place at the Bhrigu Kumar Phukan Auditorium in Dadara, Kamrup district, where an executive meeting of the Sabha was held prior to the commencement of the count.

Goswami, originally from Dhekial in Golaghat and now residing in the Choladhara area of Jorhat, has had a long association with the Sabha. He has previously served as the general secretary of the Sabha from 1999 to 2003 and is well-regarded for his contributions to Assamese literature. In addition to his leadership roles, Goswami has authored several books. Following the announcement of the results, Goswami expressed his gratitude to the members of the Sabha and the people of Assam for their support. "As the president of the Sabha, I will strive to meet the expectations of the people and continue to work towards the development of this esteemed literary body," he said.
Academician and writer Padum Rajkhowa was elected vice president, receiving more than 380 votes. Two other candidates, Bipin Kalita and Sahir Bhuyan, also contested for the position. Rajkhowa thanked the branch committees for their trust and promised to work towards restoring the Sabha’s glory. "The doors of the Sabha will remain open for all. We have much work ahead to enhance the stature of the Sabha in the coming days," Rajkhowa said.
Debajit Bora was also elected as the new secretary of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.
