GUWAHATI: The long and complicated Ayodhya land dispute which has been dragging on in various courts for more than a century finally came to its conlusion today.
The Supreme Court stated that the Centre will formulate a scheme in three months to set up a board of trustees for construction of temple at the disputed structure.
Meanwhile, the SC directed allotment of alternate land to the Muslim community.
The case was being fought between three main parties - two Hindu groups and the Muslim Waqf Board, which is responsible for the maintenance of Islamic properties in India.
The Hindu litigants are the Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing political party, and the Nirmohi Akhara, which is a sect of Hindu monks.
Before reading the judgement CJI Gogoi stated that “the court must accept faith and accept belief of worshippers. Court should preserve balance.”
The bench led by CJI said, “Hindus consider Ayodhya as birthplace of Lord Ram,they have religious sentiments, Muslims call it Babri mosque. Faith of Hindus that Lord Ram was born here is undisputed.”
“There is evidence that Ram Chabutra, Sita Rasoi was worshipped by the Hindus before the British came. Evidence in the records shows that Hindus were in the possession of outer court of the disputed land”, the bench added.
Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in West Guwahati to avoid any untoward incident.
