GUWAHATI: Trading scam accused duo Tarkik Borah (alias Tapan Borah) and Bishal Phukan were granted bail on Thursday, May 1, by the Gauhati High Court in connection with the last pending case registered against them at Barbaruah Police Station in Dibrugarh district. This development has arrived after they spent nearly eight months in custody.

The bail was sanctioned by Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia, marking a legal development in the high-profile trading scam case. The court's order paves the way for their release from Guwahati Central Jail, where they have been lodged since their arrest in 2024. However, their release remains delayed due to procedural formalities and the pending availability of the official order copy.

Separate bail applications were filed for both accused, which pertains to allegations of fraudulent trading practices involving investor funds. Bishal Phukan (22), who was arrested on September 2 last year, allegedly collected approximately ₹2,200 crore from investors under the pretext of investing in the share market but failed to deliver promised returns.

Ten days later, on September 12, actor-influencer Sumi Borah and her husband Tarkik Borah were arrested after evading police. The couple's disappearance had prompted speculation that they might have escaped to Nepal via Bihar.

Sumi Borah, who is also a prime accused and referred to as Bishal Phukan’s self-proclaimed sister, continues to remain in judicial custody as her bail pleas are still under review. Meanwhile, Tarkik’s brother, Amlan Borah, who was also arrested for his alleged involvement, has already secured bail earlier.
