“Happy to share that on the occasion of #WorldFisheriesDay, @FisheriesGoI has recognised Assam’s stellar role in promoting fisheries,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X to share the achievement. “Darrang District has been awarded as the best district for fisheries in the North East.”

Sarma further went on to highlight the importance of the sector for the state, saying, “Fisheries is an extremely valued activity in Assam and these accolades reflect the priority we are placing on increasing fish production in the State.”

In addition to Darrang’s honour, Srijoni Min Unnayan Samabai Simity Ltd, a cooperative from the state, was awarded the ‘Best Inland Fisheries Cooperative/FFPO’ under the best fisheries cooperatives/FFPO category.

World Fisheries Day is celebrated annually to highlight the need for sustainable fisheries and conservation of aquatic ecosystems. It also draws attention to challenges such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and illegal fishing practices, while advocating for the rights of small-scale and often-marginalised fishers.
