Assamese Woman Part of Medal Winning Lawn Bowls Team At Commonwealth Games

GUWAHATI: India's Lawn Bowl Women's team have created history by confirming the first-ever Lawn Bowl medal at Commonwealth Games (CWG).

The team defeated Norfolk Island and hence qualified for the semifinals of the lawn bowls competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Sunday. 

The Indian quartet started strong and raced to 11-0 lead after three ends. India however won the quarter-final match 17-9.

The four-women team consisting of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey defeated New Zealand by 16-13 on Monday.

It needs to be mentioned that one of the team members is a resident of Assam. As per reports, the 33-year-old Nayanmoni Saikia hails from Tengabari in Assam's Sarupathar.

With this win, Nayanmoni Saikia becomes the first woman and second person ever from Assam to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games after Jayanta Talukdar. 

The team will take on South Africa in the finals on August 2.
