Assamese Actor Ravi Sarma Quits BJP

GUWAHATI: Amidst Citizenship Amendment Bill protest, popular Assamese actor Ravi Sarma resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 9.

According to reports, Ravi Sarma addresed a presser in Swahid Bhawan, AASU’s city office and said “My stand against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has been clear from beforehand.”

“I have opposed it then, I oppose it now and shall continue opposing it tomorrow. I stand by the people of Assam,” he added.

He further stated that he completly supports All Assam Students’ Union's (AASU) stand against CAB.


Meanwhile the Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the bill in the Lok Sabha the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 has been introduced in the Lok Sabha with 293 Ayes and 82 Nos.
