Assam Youths Build Library in Remote Village to Promote Reading

GUWAHATI: Youths from Gosanibari village in Assam have built an open library for their village. The residents had lacked a library and as such, few young boys have built it to promote reading culture, especially among the kids. The remote village is situated near Nowboicha block, 25 km from Lakhimpur Town.

Funding was a big challenge for them, which proved to be a hindrance to their initiative. However, the villagers were supportive and pitched in to help the youths in whatever way they could.

"We had the help of villagers who donated us tins and other construction materials for our library. A lot of books have been donated to us for free," said Chiranjit Borah, one of the youths who built the library told G Plus.

Apart from the availability of a proper reading place, another aim for building the place was to promote reading culture to counter mobile addiction among the youth. The humble library boasts a wide range of books from children's literature to works of Rita Chowdhury.

They have a registration system, which takes note of personal details of people while lending them the book. A feedback form has also been attached to the books. So far, the response has been good with 20 books borrowed on the first day.

"Our library is open to all sections of people. So far, we have kept English and Assamese books," added Borah.

The initiative has been taken by Luhit Bora, Bidyut Borah, Bikash Borah, Lava Kumar Pachoni, Chiranjit Borah and Dulal Borah.
