Assam: Youth Lynched at Mariani; 8 Arrested

GUWAHATI: The Jorhat district administration arrested five persons in connection with the lynching of a youth by tea workers at Gabroo Purbat Tea Estate at Mariani.

According to reports, the deceased Debashish Gogoi (22) of Milgaon, Puthinadi, Mariani and his friend Aditya Das (23) of Deberapar Chariali, were allegedly beaten up by the tea estate workers after they allegedly hit three persons with their bike, including 2 women, near the garden factory.

Subsequently, a mob gathered at the site and beat up Debashish and Aditya, which resulted in Debashish sustaining serious injuries. Later, Debashish who was admitted in an unconscious state succumbed to his injuries at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

The names of the arrested persons so far intimated are Ashok Sawra, Asif Nayak, Sachin Sawra and Radheshyam Kurmi (workers) and Dipak Chabra (chowkidar). 

3 more persons were arrested early today; their names are yet to be disclosed.

Speaking to G Plus, Jorhat Superintendent of Police, Mrinal Talukdar said that as per preliminary investigation, 9 youths on three scooties and a motorcycle had gone inside a tea estate reportedly for an outing and tried to enter an area having 28 hillocks. However they were denied entry by the chowkidar.

"We have also arrested a youth who was trying to spark a communal angke to the incident on social media," added Mrinal Talukdar.

Meanwhile, the father of the deceased lodged an FIR at Deberapar police outpost after which a case was registered at Mariani Police Station.

Notably the post-mortem reports are yet to be recieved upon which the cause of the death will be ascertained.

Earlier in May, Kamrup district witnessed a horrifying incident of mob lynching when a group of five men beat a vegetable seller identified as Sanatan Deka to death on May 24.
