Assam: Ujjal Bhuyan Appointed As Supreme Court Judge

GUWAHATI: In a significant development, the Central government has granted its approval for the appointment of Justice Ujjal Bhuyan as a judge of the Supreme Court.

The news was confirmed by Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of State for Law and Justice, through a tweet.

According to the tweet, "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble President, after consultation with the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint the following 02 Chief Justices of High Courts as Judges of the Supreme Court of India"

The recommendation for their elevation to the Supreme Court was put forward by the Supreme Court Collegium on July 5, and now the government has given its clearance for their appointments.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, with his parent High Court being the Gauhati High Court. He has been a judge of the Gauhati High Court since October 17, 2011.

Holding the position of the senior-most judge in his parent High Court, Justice Bhuyan has been serving as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court since June 28, 2022.
