GUWAHATI: Water levels of the Brahmaputra River continue to rise rapidly, worsening an already grim flood situation in Assam. A total of 21 districts in the State have been affected by the floods that claimed the lives of two children in separate incidents in Barpeta and Morigaon districts.
The water level of Brahmaputra rose to 50.08 meters in Guwahati on August 31, from 49.88 m on August 30. The danger level in Guwahati is marked at 49.68 m by the Water Resources Department.
Apart from Guwahati, the Brahmaputra has crossed the danger level at Nimatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri. Further, the water level of the Jiadhal, Subansiri, Jia Bharali, Dikrong and Beki rivers have also crossed the danger level mark.
As per the latest Government report, 3.6 lakh people have suffered the consequences of the floods. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has set up 44 relief camps and relief distribution centres, sheltering 1,619 people.
Further, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has been reported as partially submerged by ASDMA.
