GUWAHATI: Mariani town in the Jorhat district of Assam came to a standstill on Thursday as the rising water level forced train services to a halt.
The town was hit by a heavy downpour on Wednesday night which resulted in the rising of the water of the Bhogdoi River above the danger level causing the train services to be halted for 2-3 hours, an NFR official informed G Plus. However, the train services have been resumed as of now.
Reports suggested that the heavy rains also resulted in artificial flooding that submerged the railway tracks, leading to the suspension of multiple trains at the Mariani junction. Trains at Titabar and Nakachari rail stations were also affected.
The incessant rains have rendered the road between Nakachari and Chelenghat impassable, leaving it submerged under water due to the flooding.
The impact of the halted train services was felt beyond Mariani, as major trains such as the Rajdhani Express were also stranded at the station.
In the latest reports published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday, it was revealed that three districts of the state—Bajali, Dhemaji, and Kamrup—are currently grappling with the effects of flooding. As many as 6,900 individuals have been adversely affected by the deluge, and approximately 165 hectares of cropland across 55 villages, spanning six revenue circles in the three districts, remain inundated.
