In a recent announcement on social media platform X, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu disclosed that the Higher Education Department convened a meeting with the principals and governing body presidents of 79 colleges with less than 500 enrolments. During the meeting, discussions revolved around devising strategies to boost enrolment numbers.
Consequently, the minister instructed the higher education department to formulate a policy for merging colleges or departments with low student numbers, mirroring the approach adopted by the school education department. The government's objective is to merge colleges or departments with dwindling enrolments and cease teacher recruitment in departments with low student turnout.
