Assam to get 3 new Medical Colleges

GUWAHATI: Three new medical colleges will be constructed in the State and their foundation stones will be laid in January next year.

The foundation stone of the Nalbari Medical College, to be built at a cost of Rs 398.31 crore, will be laid on January 7. This project is being partly funded by the NLCPR and the rest will be covered by the state. The foundation stone of Kokrajhar Medical College will be laid on January 6 and it is being built at an estimated cost of Rs. 382.70 crores. And, the Tinsukia Medical College’s foundation will be laid on January 9 and the college is being funded by the Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority. 

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the construction of the three colleges will be completed in three years.

The new medical colleges at Nalbari, Tinsukia, and Kokrajhar would have MBBS seat capacity of 100 each. Each college will also have a bed capacity of 500.

Currently, there are six medical colleges in Assam that have 726 MBBS seats and 495 PG seats. Once the upcoming medical colleges at Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, and Diphu are completed, the number of MBBS seats in the State would increase by 1126.
