GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday, May 18, decided to approve non-Aadhaar based online registration in Employment Exchanges to ease the problems faced by people without Aadhaar cards.

The decision was taken in the State Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Earlier in April, the Assam Government had decided to file an Interlocutory Application (IA) in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking Aadhaar Cards for 28 lakh people in the State, including those left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list.

“About 28 lakh people in the State still do not have Aadhaar cards, and these people are deprived of benefits from numerous Central schemes. The State Government would file an IA with the Supreme Court seeking Aadhaar cards for those who were left out of the NRC,” Parliamentary Affairs and Information Minister Pijush Hazarika had said.

For non-Aadhaar based registration, all citizens of India above the age of 14 years who are permanent residents of Assam ,(as per Office memorandum no .E/P-344/41472 Dtd 05-07-1971) are eligible to Register their names in the Employment Exchanges of the State of Assam.
