GUWAHATI: The attackers who vandalised and torched the Batadraba Police Station in Nagaon District of Assam on Saturday, May 20, had come prepared. It was not an act of immediate reaction, but was a planned incident, said Leena Doley, Superintendent of Police, Nagaon.
Briefing reporters in Nagaon on Monday, the SP said that the attackers were carrying petrol and had come with an intention to destroy the police records as some of them had criminal records.
“One thing is clear in this investigation is, this is not an immediate reaction but a pre-planned attack. They came prepared to attack the police station and the police. They had petrol with them. Many of these individuals are criminally active and have criminal records. So, we think that they had an intention that if the records at the station get destroyed their records will also vanish,” said Doley.
The SP said that the police had detained 12 persons and six persons have been arrested in this connection. “We have released the 12 after questioning. We have prayed for 15 days of custody for the arrested but got five days. We are questioning them.
Leena Doley informed that the search of the homes of the accused had remained incomplete. The police searched again and found a handmade revolver and four 9mm caliber bullets and also 6500 drug tablets. The tablets were found in the home of Najibur Rehman who was earlier arrested, said SP Nagaon.
The SP admitted that there was lapse on the part of the Officer In Charge of the Batadraba Police Station. The OC was late in reporting the incident that led to the death of Safiqul Islam in the morning. By the time they came to know about it the station was surrounded and was on fire. An inquiry has been ordered on what led to the death of Safiqul Islam by the DIG Central and action will taken if further lapse is found, said Leena Doley.
The SP said that the police is looking for various angles and taking it all very seriously on whatever they are suspicious about.
Doley said that the daughter of the deceased who set the fire has been arrested and they are in search of one more person who is on the run.
An inquiry has been ordered on what led to the death of Safiqul Islam by the DIG Central and action will be taken if further lapse is found, said Leena Doley.
