Assam Tea Industry Bears 500 Cr Loss During COVID-19 Lockdown: Chandra Mohan Patowary

GUWAHATI: Assam Minister of Industry and Commerce Chandra Mohan Patowary on May 6 said that owing to the lockdown, the total decline in production of tea in Assam is estimated at 32 million kg amounting to a loss of more than Rs. 500 crores. 

These include produces from both big and small tea gardens.

The tea industry has been hit hard as their major production period has been affected. 

Earlier, in 2019 the total tea production in India was 1389.70 million kg. Tea production in Assam in 2019 was 715.49 million kg, i.e., 51.51% of the total tea production in India.

Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal has announced the waiver of Minimum Fixed Charge on supply of natural gas to the tea gardens which were closed during the lockdown period.
