Assam: Tea Board Of India Likely To Fix Minimum Price For Green Tea Leaves

GUWAHATI: The Tea Board of India will most likely fix a minimum price for green tea leaves in the state soon, said Assam Industry and Commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on Friday, September 20 at a meeting to discuss how to increase export of tea and its quality.

He added that the tea growers will have to ensure good quality of tea leaves to avail the minimum price.

At the meeting, Patowary added that the government is looking into serious steps for branding Assam tea. As part of this, a delegation will be sent to Dubai Tea Park to study their model in the near future and open lounges of Assam tea will also be set up in different cities to brand the locally produced tea.

Based on reports, the Tea Board of India will most likely discuss the matter at its next board meeting on September 24.

It should be noted that in the past few years, the export of tea has come down to 12 percent as compared to 37 percent in 1961. To add to that, the domestic consumption of tea has also gone down in recent years.
