Assam: Tarun Gogoi to be Cremated at Navagraha Crematorium on Nov 26

GUWAHATI: Veteran politician Tarun Gogoi, who was the longest-serving chief minister of Assam, will be cremated at the Navagraha crematorium in Guwahati on 26th November.

The announcement was made by state Congress Party president, Ripun Bora to media earlier. Confirming the same, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "As per wishes of family and @INCAssam late Tarun Gogoi will be cremated in Navagraha Smashan (crematorium) on Thursday, November 26, 2020. Prayers."


Earlier, Congress had urged the state government to allot land  for the last rites of Tarun Gogoi, where a memorial couold be built subsequently. However, citing lack of space within the capital city, the state government proposed either of two sites - at Sonapur or Amingoan.


Congress had even proposed cremating the honorable leader at the premises of the party's landed property at the Manabendra Sarma complex at Dispur.


But finally, Gogoi's family expressed the wish to perform the funeral at the Navagraha Crematorium in Guwahati. 


A three-day mourning period is being observed in the state currently and the mortal remains of the beloved politician has been kept at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra today, on 25th November for people to pay their last respects.
