Assam State Zoo’s oldest inmate dies

GUWAHATI: The oldest inmate of the Assam State Zoo, Raja, a 48-year-old hippopotamus, died on 18 November.

According to reports, Raja died of old age and was later buried in the State Zoo premises after necessary formalities. 

Raja was brought to the Assam State Zoo from the Southwitch Birds and Animals Inc in Blackstone, US, in 1974. He was one-year-old then and was accompanied by his would-be companion ‘Rani’, which passed away in 2014.

It is to be mentioned that the lifespan of a hippopotamus is between 45 to 50 years.
