Assam son R.P. Kalita takes charge of COS in Eastern Command of Indian Army

GUWAHATI: Assam-born lieutenant general Rana Pratap Kalita takes charge of chief of staff (COS) in the Eastern Command of Indian Army at Fort William in Kolkata.

Kalita is the second lieutenant general to hold the post from the state and the first Assamese to be appointed as COS in Eastern Command.

The new COS previously received Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his meritorious services. He has also been conferred with ‘Ati Vishisht Sewa Medal’ for his contributions to the nation during his tenure as the general officer commanding of Baramula Division in Kashmir Valley.

Kalita, who hails from Rangiya in Kamrup district, is an alumnus of the Sainik School Goalpara and National Defence Academy.

In 1984, he had been commissioned in the Army in the 9th Kumaon Regiment. Throughout his career, he has had various coveted posts including the BGS (Ops) at 15th Corps, Srinagar, where he commanded the 19th infantry division. He has also commanded the 13th Rashtriya Rifles and the 71st Infantry Brigade in Lucknow.

Kalita has also been an instructor in the Officer Training Academy.
