GUWAHATI: The 37th National Games, hosted in Goa, witnessed Assam's remarkable success in weightlifting as Sidhant Gogoi and Popy Hazarika delivered exceptional performances, clinching a silver and gold medal, respectively.
In a thrilling contest, Sidhant Gogoi competed in the 67 kg weight category, showcasing his extraordinary strength and technique. He lifted an impressive 116 kg in the snatch and a remarkable 150 kg in the clean and jerk, securing a well-deserved silver medal for Assam.
Popy Hazarika, another outstanding athlete representing Assam, left an indelible mark on the Games by clinching the gold medal in the women's 59kg weightlifting category. Her stellar performance earned her accolades and recognition from across the nation.
Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Popy Hazarika, acknowledging her exceptional achievement. In a message, CM Sarma expressed, "Many congratulations to Popy Hazarika on winning Gold in the 59kg weightlifting category at the 37th National Games in Goa. Assam is proud of your achievement!"
The grand inauguration of the 37th National Games took place at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa, with a spectacular opening ceremony. A 15-member Assam team proudly participated in the players' march past, representing their state with pride and honor. Weightlifter Sidhant Gogoi and gymnast Upasa Talukdar were chosen as the flag bearers of the Assam contingent, symbolizing their exemplary contribution to the state's sporting excellence.
This edition of the National Games has attracted nearly 350 athletes and officials from Assam, competing across 27 diverse sporting disciplines. The dedication and skill exhibited by Assam's athletes continue to shine on the national stage, reinforcing their commitment to sports excellence.
