GUWAHATI: In a recent development, the district and sessions judge of Hailakandi, Sanjoy Hazarika, pronounced a life sentence for seven individuals, including a court employee, in a murder case related to a land dispute that occurred seven years ago. The judgment, delivered under Sessions Case 10/2018, was rendered on February 26, as per reports.

The seven convicts, namely Kamal Uddin Mazumdar (court process server), Fakrul Islam Laskar, Anwar Hussain Laskar, Asab Uddin Mazumdar, Nezam Uddin Mazumdar, Anam Uddin Mazumdar, and Ainul Haque Laskar, were sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Additionally, they received three years of imprisonment under Section 148, along with a fine of ₹20,000 each.
Defaulting on the fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment, reports stated.
The court meticulously considered the statements of 16 witnesses, including an additional district commissioner and a medical officer, during the proceedings. The incident leading to the murder transpired on August 8, 2017, in Nishchintapur village, Hailakandi district, when the victim, Abdul Basit Mazumdar, a shopkeeper, was attacked with a sharp weapon around 7:30 PM. Despite immediate medical attention at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The legal process unfolded when the deceased's wife, Jubeda Bibi Mazumdar, filed a case (Case number 476/2017) at Hailakandi Sadar police station. The charges registered included sections 147, 148, 149, 341, 326, 302, and 34 of the IPC. Subsequently, the police conducted a thorough investigation, apprehended the accused individuals, and presented them in court.
