Assam Sahitya Sabha slams KVS over Assamese language row

GUWAHATI: The Assam Sahitya Sabha  (ASS), the apex literary body of Assam, on May 13 slammed Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) for its move to make Assamese language irrelevant across its schools.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, ASS president Paramananda Rajbongshi reportedly said, "Assam should democratically shut down all the KVs." He also demand that Assamese should be made a compulsory subject from classes I to X in the schools run by KVS.

KVS in an earlier notification said “If at least 15 or more students opt to study an additional language, the teaching of the additional language may be taken up by the respective schools as per requirement beyond the school hours.”

The literary body further threatened to close down Kendriya Vidyalayas across Assam if KVS do not withdraw the notification.
