GUWAHATI: Assam recorded an increase in its elephant population according to the recent 2024 Elephant Population Estimation conducted by the Assam Forest Department.

This was shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, January 2.
“The number of elephants have increased from 5,719 to 5,828,” Sarma stated on X. “Commend the efforts of the Forest Dept in Elephant conservation.”
The survey, last conducted in 2017, has seen an upward trend in elephant population, with 5,246 elephants recorded in 2002, 5,281 in 2008, and 5,620 in 2011.
Experts have attributed this steady growth to effective conservation measures and habitat management initiatives undertaken by the state government and its people.
