Assam Police Constitutes Committee to Counsel Police Personnel with Suicidal Tendency

GUWAHATI: Following the suicide of an Assam Police constable posted at the residence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Director-General of Police has passed an order to constitute a committee to study the issue of suicide amongst the personnel of Assam Police.

The committee that will be chaired by Dipak Kumar ADGP (TAP) will have Gaurav Upadhya, AIG (L) as the member convenor and Nanda Singh AIG (AP) and Dipjyoti Sharma (Medical and Health Officer, 10th AP Bn) as members.

The following tasks are to undertaken by the committee –

1.     Study the trend of suicides being committed by Assam Police Personnel by enumerating data of suicides committed & reasons for the same, of the last 5 years.

2.     Study the existing mechanisms for counseling of Police personnel of Assam Police for their mental wellness.

3.     Study the existing system of medical treatment of Assam Police Personnel & existing policy of reimbursement of medical expenditure incurred.

4.     The committee should submit its recommendation for the systems & processes that need to be created / improved upon so that the trend of suicides being committed by Assam Police Personnel is prevented.

The committee would be submitting its report within 10 days.

Babul Chandra Das, aged 49 years, who was posted as a security official in CM’s residence was found hanging in the toilet on 16 February.

A native of Patharkuchi near Pathshala, Das was reportedly undergoing treatment for a heart ailment.

This is the second incident of suicide in CM’s residence in two years.
