Assam players shine in KIIT Chess

GUWAHATI: Altogether 15 players from Assam took part in the 11th KIIT International Chess Festival organised by KIIT University and Orissa Chess Association under the aegis of All India Chess Federation. The festival was held from May 25 to June 1 at Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. 

Most of the Assam players participated in below 14 category while few senior players also took part. 

FIDE arbiter from Assam Biswajit Bharadwaj, who was nominated as an arbiter in this event, received an International Arbiter norm from it. 

Shahil Dey, Dhrupad Kashyap and Manthan Kashyap Dutta from the State participated in the Category A Grandmaster event which witnessed a total participation of 239 players from 24 different countries.
 
Dhrupad Kashyap, a student of Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti School emerged as the top performer scoring 5 points out of possible 10, a feat that increased his FIDE rating by 92 points.

Further, Manthan Kashyap Dutta, a student of Delhi Public School Guwahati scored 4.5 points and increased his rating by 106 points and Mrinmoyee Rajkhowa, a student of Sudershan Public School Guwahati scored 6 points out of 9 rounds and secured best U-8 prize in the C-Category.

The prizes were awarded by Abdul Ghani, Greenman of India, Sekhar Ch. Sahu, President, AOCA, K K Sarma, Secretary, AOCA and Debasish Barua, Chief Arbiter of the tournament.
