GUWAHATI: In a recent operation led by the Barpeta Police, three individuals, namely Saiful Islam, Hamid Khalifa, and Roushan Amin Ansary, have been apprehended. The operation resulted in the recovery of a substantial quantity of Mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant drug commonly known as the "poor man's cocaine".
The seizure, totalling approximately 2.21 kilograms, is estimated to be worth over ₹4 crore.
The operation took place at Kayakuchi Bazar, situated under the jurisdiction of Barpeta Police Station. The investigation into this case is currently underway, with law enforcement authorities working to uncover the full extent of the drug network and bring those involved to justice.
Mephedrone, often referred to as "M-Cat" or "Meow Meow," is a potent psychostimulant drug that has gained notoriety for its stimulant and mood-altering effects. Mephedrone has been a growing concern due to its potential for abuse and the associated health risks.
Although police officials couldn't confirm, this is probably the first and most certainly the largest seizure of Mephedrone in Assam. GPlus spoke to Barpeta officer-in-charge (OC) who could not ascertain where the drug came from or where it was headed.
