GUWAHATI: Amidst onion crisis and sky high price, Assam Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury said that now onions will be imported from Egypt.
According to reports, onions will be imported from Egypt to Mumbai and from Mumbai it will come to Assam.
The price of the onions till it reaches Assam will be at Rs. 55 per kg.
A senior official of Food and Civil Supplies department told G plus that the average daily demand of onions in Guwahati alone is about 800 quintals.
It is to be mentioned that onions was being sold at Rs. 98 per kg in Guwahati on December 3.
"The government’s planned move to import onions from Egypt won’t affect the prices much because it will be very low which could cushion the soaring prices," said a commodity expert.
The prices of onions are expected to come down only after January 2020.
