GUWAHATI: A Muslim man in Hailakandi district drove his Hindu neighbour and his pregnant wife to the hospital to ensure the safe delivery of their baby boy during curfew and communal tensions in the area last week on Sunday, May 12.
At the time of the incident, the curfew was in full force and Rubon Das was worried for his wife, Nandita, as she was in labour and there was no ambulance or any other service available to take her from Rajyeshwar village to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi.

This is when Maqbool Hussain Laskar, their neighbour and friend, came to the couple's aid and helped them out by taking them to the hospital in his auto-rickshaw. He put his life in danger during the curfew and managed to take Nandita to the hospital in the nick of time as she delivered her baby just 10 minutes after they reached the hospital.
It should be noted that Rubon and his wife have named their baby 'Shanti' (peace) as the boy has been born amidst rising tensions and curfew in the district. The parents hope that he will herald peace in the riot-struck area.
Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jaali and Superintendent of Police, Mohneesh Mishra also visited Rubon's residence on Wednesday, May 15, and congratulated the happy couple.
