GUWAHATI: Tension prevailed on the Assam-Mizoram border after reports of clashes took place between the people of the two states in which several were injured last Sunday.

Following the incident, Member of Parliament (MP) Badruddin Ajmal claimed that a few miscreants from the Mizoram side had entered Assam and caused the violence.  "Tensed situation at Assam-Mizoram border in Cachar & Karimganj Distt since yesterday. Miscreants, with the help of Mizo Police, entered into Assam & burnt several houses injuring many," Ajmal posted on Twitter.

A highly placed source in Mizoram has claimed that villagers from the Assam side showed aggression in the border area causing the violence.

As of now, the situation is calm in the area but the truck drivers carrying consignments have been left stranded since the inter-state movement has been halted. "There are state-level talks going to bring the situation under control," added the source.

Meanwhile, the Centre has intervened in the situation. "Informed PM Narendra Modiji about the present Assam-Mizoram border situation over the phone this afternoon. I thank the Hon'ble PM for his support and assurance to solve the issue," posted Sarbananda Sonowal on Twitter. The Mizoram CM Zoramthanga has called the Centre's approach as 'noble'. "May this kind intervention brought peace to the region and strengthen our bonds," said the Mizoram CM.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also requested to maintain restraint. "People of Assam and Mizoram have always lived in peace and harmony. We all have the inherent strengths to resolve all issues on the border with the spirit of good neighbours. I request everyone to please follow restraint," posted the Minister.
