GUWAHATI: Assam emerged as the highest beneficiary under the Indian government’s Security-Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme for 2023-24, receiving ₹266.16 crore for strengthening security infrastructure and operational requirements in the region.

According to a report by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), this marks an increase from ₹109.16 crore allocated in 2022-23, thereby totaling the total expenditure provided to Assam since 2015-16 to ₹500 crore.
Additionally, the northeastern region witnessed a substantial rise of 43.7 per cent in allocations under the scheme. Manipur’s allocated funds surged to ₹121.20 crore in 2023-24, compared to ₹23.65 crore in the previous year. Tripura’s allocation also doubled, climbing from ₹18.85 crore in 2022-23 to ₹38.87 crore in the current financial year.
Meghalaya and Nagaland witnessed increases to ₹15.94 crore and ₹39.76 crore, respectively.
However, Arunachal Pradesh is the only state to record a sharp decline in its allocation, dropping from ₹100.57 crore in 2022-23 to ₹18.07 crore this year.
The MHA further emphasised its ongoing efforts to address the crisis in Manipur, which has experienced bouts of violence. To bring stability to the region, an additional ₹247.26 crore was allocated as special assistance.
