GUWAHATI: The "Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Assam Amendment) Bill, 2023" has received official approval during the weekly cabinet meeting that took place on September 8.
The legislation seeks to guarantee fair and just compensation to individuals whose land is acquired for public initiatives. Crucially, the bill extends its protective umbrella to encompass individuals beyond landowners, ensuring their interests are safeguarded through lump-sum Rehabilitation and Resettlement payments.
The legislation also grants the State Government the authority to selectively exempt certain projects from the stipulations outlined in Chapter II and Chapter III. These exemptions are primarily reserved for projects deemed critical to national security or the defence of India, as laid out in section 10A of the bill.
Notably, projects falling under this category will be excused from the requirement of obtaining prior consent from the landowners.
