GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Metro district administration has directed all government, provincialised, and private schools in the district to conduct daily checks of students' bags and pockets as a precaution following the death of a student in a school recently.

"Consequence upon the fatal incident that took place in a school of nearby district, it has been decided by the undersigned that all Govt./Provincialized/ Private Schools functioning under Kamrup Metro district should check the school bags and pockets of all students by the concern class teacher before starting of class each day and must ensure if the students are in possession of any arms/weapons/sharp objects or any toxic products like liquid, gutka, tobacco, cigarette etc or any other objectionable items. If found, it should be immediately ceased and inform their parents immediately and also a proper copy of information should be sent to the undersigned. This matter is to be treated seriously and to be strictly adhered to in all schools of Kamrup Metro without fail on daily basis," the notification stated (sic).
A Class 9 student of Padumpukhuri School in Darrang district was killed by a classmate following a quarrel inside the school premises earlier this week.
The victim, identified as Bhabesh Deka, succumbed to injuries sustained during the altercation.
According to Darrang Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal, the incident came to light after the school's headmaster alerted local authorities.
Bhabesh was seriously injured and was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending doctors.
In another incident a student of a school in Jorhat was stabbed by another student.
