The decision was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following the state cabinet meeting held on Monday, May 5.
The new subsidised scheme will come into effect from October, and it will seek to benefit over 72 lakh families across the state. As per direction, each NFSA ration card holder will be entitled to receive 1 kg each of masur Dal, sugar, and salt every month at the subsidised rates.
These commodities will be distributed alongside existing NFSA allocations of rice and wheat through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The state government will also bear the subsidy amount, fixed at ₹25 per kg of masur dal, ₹20 per kg of sugar, and ₹10 per kg of salt.
This initiative has been particularly introduced to make essential nutrition items more affordable for economically weaker households. It has also been expected to improve dietary diversity and support better health indicators in both rural and urban regions.
Further details regarding vendor procurement, supply logistics, and monitoring systems will be released by the Food and Civil Supplies Department in the coming months.
