GUWAHATI: The Assam Government will preserve the Jorhat Central Jail as a heritage site and will redevelop its entire campus with a memorial museum and park .
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the office of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Prisons (Range) Jorhat on February 4, and reviewed the redevelopment project of the Central Jail.
The Central Jail was constructed during British rule and carries memories of freedom struggle as many prominent freedom fighters of Assam were imprisoned in this Jail.
"The Government of Assam will preserve this Jail as a heritage site and will redevelop its entire campus with a memorial garden, museum and park, apart from improving the existing infrastructure. The memorial garden will highlight the contribution of the North East in India’s freedom movement from 1857 onwards," the Office of the Chief Minister tweeted.
Under the redevelopment project, steps will be taken to preserve memories of freedom fighters - Swahid Kushal Konwar, social reformer and freedom fighter, Pitambar Deva Goswami, and others.
Further, the Assam Government will develop a heritage site in 100 bighas of jail land.
