Assam Govt To Release ‘Foreigners’ Detained For More Than 3 Years

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has notified the release of “declared foreigners” who spent more than three years in detention centres across the state following a Union home ministry directive which has been set by the Supreme Court.

Ashutosh Agnihotri, commissioner and secretary of state home and political department said that a notification has been issued and special director general of police (border) has been given the responsibility to take care of the process.

Six detention camps in Assam have 938 detainees, of which 335 are eligible for release. 15 more would have been eligible, but they were among the 25 detainees who passed away due to illness.

The Supreme Court on May 10 had ordered that ‘foreigners’ be released after completing three or more years in detention camps if they furnish a bond with two sureties of Rs. 1 lakh each of two Indian citizens, give details of their address following release and provide biometric details. They will also have to report to a specified police station once a week.
