Assam Govt stresses on development of National Highways

Giving highest priority to develop National Highways in the State and to use it to act as a ‘force multiplier’ to State’s development, Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Tuesday called on Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and drew his attention to the existing road conditions in the State especially in Barak valley and demanded Centre’s immediate intervention. In the meeting at New Delhi which lasted nearly 35 minutes, the Governor apprised Gadkari of the prevailing conditions of National Highways in Assam particularly in Barak Valley and impressed upon him on how the National Highways in the State need an immediate ‘face-lift’ to act vigorously as a harbinger of State’s economy. Purohit also drew the Union Minister’s attention of the worsening road condition in Barak Valley which has virtually put a ‘spanner’ on the Government’s commitment to bring Barak Valley’s development in the agenda of priorities.   The Governor after assuming the gubernatorial position had extensively travelled every part of the State and took stock of the existing road conditions in both the Brahmaputra and Barak Valley and he was satisfied beyond any doubt that the National Highways in some parts of the Brahmaputra Valley and entire stretch in Barak Valley needs to be revamped.   Honourable Union Minister told the Governor that he will visit Assam shortly and hold a meeting with the Governor, Chief Minister, officials of the Central Government, State Government and other stake holders to draw a ‘road map’ for Centre’s intervention for National Highways. Honourable Minister Gadkari assured the Governor that he will give top priority to the road development and waterways development in Assam.   Shri Purohit while informing Gadkari the verdant Brahmaputra and Barak Rivers along with their tributaries which constitute the ‘life-line’ of the people of Assam sought the Centre’s assistance in improving and revamping the inland waterways to propel State’s development.    Stay updated on the go with GPlus News.
