Assam govt spends Rs 17 cr in less than a year for Sunday Walking Zone

GUWAHATI: Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Chandra Mohan Patowary during the Assam Assembly informed that the state government has spent over Rs 17 crore in less that one year to incur the development and maintenance expenses of Sunday Walking Zone along the Brahmaputra River.

The minister while informing the assembly said that an amount of Rs 13.68 cr had been given to PWD (Roads), for construction of drains, maintenance of the green parks, developing the footpaths and covering the man-holes on the roads.

An amount of Rs 1.35 crore was spent on stage construction, beautifying the view points, and making the sitting arrangements.

Assam Electricity Distribution Company has been allotted an amount of over Rs 4 lakh for arrangement of electricity and fixing ornamental lights across the stretch of Fancy Bazar.

However, several citizens have criticized the decision of walking zone which has been creating a lot of traffic problems every Sunday evening.
