GUWAHATI: On June 30, the Assam government, through the office of the Chief Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD) - Buildings, issued a tender notice through a newspaper advertisement inviting bidders for upgradation of hospitals. The work is for “Upgradation of existing hospitals for setting up of ICUs for treatment of patients of COVID-19 under Assam Critical Care Project 2020.”
The Assam government, in its tender, has allocated around Rs. 256 crores for the up-gradation of 25 hospitals across the state of Assam. The ones in the city include MMCH and hospitals at Sonapur and Kalapahar.

Speaking to G Plus, PWD (Building) Chief Engineer, Altaf Ahmed said, "We have done these kinds of projects earlier as well. Any kind of construction of building including hospitals will fall under us."
"In hospitals which do not have ICUs we have to bring up the facility as this falls under civil works. The hospitals will not be able to do it as the structure has to be constructed by us only," he added.
However, once the ICU is set up by the PWD along with the fittings and fixtures, the respective medical colleges and hospitals will install the equipment.
In the tender advertised by the PWD, the department will construct the structure of the ICUs, the oxygen gas pipe linking along with flooring and walls taking all the requirements of the unit as prescribed by the hospital management.
