Assam Govt Clarifies its Stand on Decision to Close Down State-Funded Madrassas

GUWAHATI: Assam Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has stressed on the uniformity of education after the state government reiterated its decision to ban state-funded Madrassas, reported ANI.

"In my opinion, teaching 'Quran' can't happen at the cost of government money. If we have to do so then we should also teach both the Bible and Bhagavad Gita. So, we want to bring uniformity and stop this practice," said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He further revealed that a notification will be released in November regarding the matter. "All State-run madrassas will be converted into regular schools or in certain cases teachers will be transferred to state-run schools and madrassas will be shut down. A notification will be released in November," added the Minister.

"The government of Assam is spending over Rs 200 crores on state-run Madrassas which are in turn teaching Quran. There is demand from many other communities to run similar schools," Sarma had told Times Now.
